niime paper

¥550〜1,650

As long as we continue making things, scraps will inevitably be produced. Can't we use them for something? Through constant thinking and discussion, connections formed, and from tamaki niime's scraps, “niime paper” was born. Introduced by WACCA, who designs washi paper projects and whom we met at the Kyoto “dialogue” craft and handmade exhibition, we pulverized the scraps at Ishikawa Soken in Shizuoka. This led us to Takahiro Shiramizu, founder of Unagi no Nedoko, and then to Nakamura Paper Mill in Yame, Fukuoka, where the scraps were made into paper. Finally, at Nick in Asago, Hyogo, they were crafted into notebooks and memo pads. The colors of the fabric scraps appear in the paper's hue, while lingering threads create a pattern-like effect. The texture feels softer and fluffier than regular paper, with a distinct cotton feel. See it, touch it, use it—this is the form of “circulation” tamaki niime has arrived at. Just like the fabric itself, the paper born from these scraps is also one-of-a-kind. Please use it daily for messages, gifts, and everyday moments.

Instead of letting them go to waste, what if old paper and used clothing could be reborn as new resources?

With this vision in mind, the fabric offcuts were first pulverized at <Ishikawa Soken>, an organization dedicated to turning waste into value. Then, at <Nakamura Paper MFG.Co.,Ltd> in Yame, Fukuoka—specializing in shoji paper and other traditional washi—the paper was created.

Since they usually produce white washi, niime paper can only be made in the rare window before the machines are cleaned, so that the colors of the fabric offcuts do not affect their regular production.

The paper is then cut and finished into notebooks and memo pads at <NIC> in Asago, Hyogo. As for postcards, we handcraft them ourselves, combining the paper with fabric offcuts.

Through the hands of many people, the scraps are transformed and given a new life -each piece one of a kind.
