The Gentle Flames of our Creative Ambitions the “Knit team”

〈part 2〉

〈continued from part 1〉

Yamashita
Well, we tried so many times, but we couldn’t get her approval. We started feeling discouraged. Even though I went to training for WHOLEGARMENT, I still had a hard time using it efficiently. I had just learned the basic techniques, so I needed to learn more at our lab. I was the only one who knew how to use it at the time, which is why I had so much responsibility.

—— Hmmm…

Yamashita
However, I couldn’t make it work correctly. There were a lot of issues that I had no control over. I wondered how I could overcome them.

—— You had to go through severe checks and criticism. That’s why it took time before you could finally begin production.

Yamashita
It took almost 2 months. When Ms Tamaki initially approved it, however, she did so reluctantly, and at the last minute when we had no more time to delay so as to begin production for real. Because I had spent too much time completing the items.

—— In your determination, you focused on making knit products, right?

Yamashita
You are right. And we also had the pre-orders of knit products from the wholesalers.

—— Were there samples for them?
Yamashita
Yes, they were.

—— Did you feel that you had somewhat reached your goal at that point?

Yamashita
Umm…I don’t know. I don’t really remember. My memory isn’t so clear on that…

—— You were too exhausted (laugh). Your mind must have been a little blurry.

Yamashita
(laugh) The thing I could recall is that I was sitting on an 18-litre drum; weaving in yarn tails of knits silently by myself in front of the machines. I only have those scenes in my memory.

—— …

Yamashita
Other than that, I don’t recall how to manage that.

—— Oh… I see …

Yamashita
Yes (laugh).

—— You tried to be perfect when it came to the knit products. You worked so hard that you can’t remember what you did. Even though you got the approval, could you clearly see your direction after that?

Yamashita
Yes, I think so. After that…

—— It went by faster?

Yamashita
It went fast but not smoothly. For example, we only liked one product out of the many samples we made.

—— Ms Tamaki finally gave her approval after a lot of trial and error, correct?

Yamashita
Initially, we were unable to make any of the items we desired.

—— Mr Yamashita, you had specific concepts in mind, right?

Yamashita
Yes, I did.

—— You surely had those concepts, which were based on the tamaki niime brand.

Yamashita
That’s right. But the problem was that I had been working mostly on men’s clothes during my career.

—— I see.

Yamashita
Now, I had to work on women’s clothes, especially for middle-aged women, which I had never done before.

—— Was that the brand target from the beginning?

Yamashita
At that time, we had more demand for middle-aged women, whose sizes and body shapes were very different from young men’s clothing. It took time for me to understand and learn that.

—— I see. It was difficult for you. Ms Tamaki is very picky about the comforts of clothes and women’s feelings.

Yamashita
Indeed.

—— About that………Ms Miyamoto started working about the same time as Mr Yamashita did, right?

Miyamoto
I started working a few months later.

Yamashita
Yes, a month or two months difference.

—— Back then the “Knit team” didn’t exist, right?

Yamashita
We already had the large WHOLEGARMENT, and later on, we added the smaller ones when we moved to the previous place, because we became busy making small items with the large machine.
We found there is a small model for making small accessories and we asked to buy it.

—— I see.

Yamashita
We used to use the weaving machine as well as using the knitting machine for support at the same time.

—— You used both at the same time.

Yamashita
We tried many things.

・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・

—— Now, would you tell me about your goals and desires for the future? First off, how about Ms Miyamoto?

Miyamoto
For the team goal, I would like to have the knit products become one of the leading shares in all “tamaki niime” products. I hope they continue their upward growth.

—- Do you have anything you want to make?

Miyamoto
Well, since I am in charge of small accessories, I usually make designs of “boso” and leg covers, which are made every season. There are limits to making with only WHOLEGARMENT, so I hope I could enhance the creativity of that. I hope we add some works or sewing combinations, that would broaden our creativity.

—— I see. Thank you very much. Next, Ms Nakamura, please.

Nakamura
This is my personal goal and what I should do continuously; I have been trying to improve the quality of my creations, understanding the increased need for knowledge and skills. Other than that, I want to pursue creativity, which only “tamaki niime” can do.

—— I see.

Nakamura
The “Knit team” went to Yamagata during winter for training and had a chance to see many knitting companies. We found it so amazing because their skills were exceptional. I felt I couldn’t compete. I hope I could make the best products that I can, as my aim is to learn and make an effort to work on better products.

—— What areas did you feel that they excelled?

Nakamura
I feel challenged concerning the technique of WHOLEGARMENT. They are experts in that area.

Yamashita
There are some excellent people whose skill level exceeds the WHOLEGARMENT technicians.

—— Wow. That’s awesome. They are inventing their own knitting styles?

Yamashita
By the way, we make the CAD (Computer Aided Design) data, and they can make unique creations which can not be replicated.

—— Hahaha, that’s crazy.

Nakamura
We couldn’t beat them out, but I thought we could compete with what “tamaki niime” is known for. Right now, because of the Coronavirus, we have a different situation. Since we can handle the whole production process with WHOLEGARMENT, our team is very flexible in their work. Every year, we have seasonal routine tasks for Spring and Summer, and Autumn and Winter, but I think we could attempt different tasks this year. I want to try knitting small accessories made with the larger machines, or even things that I have never tried before.

—— Thank you very much. Well, how about you, Tu?

Tu
I would like to make the knit tops and items, which can be nicely coordinated with other “tamaki niime” products. Later, I want to focus on other daily products that could be favoured by customers, not for fashionable clothes.

—— You mean practical daily products, not just fashion, right?

Tu
That’s right.

—— Did you get that idea because of the influence of the Coronavirus?

Tu
I think so.

—— Do you have any particular products you wish to make?

Tu
I am thinking of aprons, kitchen items or eco-bags now. Maybe underwear. (laugh)

Nakamura
Yeah.

—— We would see “tamaki niime’s” useful daily products. I can’t wait!

・・・・・・・・・・

—— Well, finally, I want Mr Yamashita to have his say. Did you notice any changes in creativity in the “Knit team” due to the influence of the Coronavirus?

Yamashita
Uhh, I don’t feel any changes myself. Even without Coronavirus, I always have ideas in mind that I want for clothing that makes people give a little laugh when they wear them. I want to make people happy who wear what I’ve designed, which is what I’ve wanted since I was young. That has never changed.

—— In that sense, your wish has become more durable under the influence of the Pandemic. Basically, your dream is dyed-in-the-wool, correct?

Yamashita
Right. However, I felt that if this Pandemic situation continues for a long time, there is a risk I may lose my apparel job. That’s why I made masks with all my heart.

—— …

Yamashita
So I kept thinking about it while I was making masks. I heard all the sad stories from my friends, who work at apparel companies. I really felt that I don’t want to experience such a tragedy. Other than that, nothing has changed.

—— It must be very hard if you have to lose your favourite apparel job due to Coronavirus.

Yamashita
Absolutely. —— You had mentioned before, that you want to make people smile with your designed clothes. Do you have your own policy based on personal tastes?

Yamashita
Well, I wish they could understand why we were making such things.

—— I see.

Yamashita
In creating clothes, we also consider the apparel company workers in the same industry as well as the customers. We utilize pattern and material concepts that make other company workers wonder how or why we did it.

—— As they see such ideas, you want to surprise them with the uniqueness of the concept, right?

Yamashita
That’s right. Since I am a bit older in the company, I have made plans for my ideas up until my retirement.

—— Wow.

Yamashita
I want to steadily accomplish my plans one by one.

—— Is that your goal?

Yamashita
Yes, that’s my goal.

—— I see…

Yamashita
Also, I want to share industry experiences with other staff, many of whom had their first experience working in the apparel industry right here.

—-You have currently expanded your workforce.

Yamashita
Yes. They might know what we are doing is different, after gaining an understanding of what other companies do. With an understanding of the reality of the apparel industry, I want them to imagine the possibilities of what we can do.

—— Comprehensively, you want them to challenge their own creativity. By the way, what is your dream for the future? Is it challenging to explain? If so, just give me a hint.

Yamashita
It wouldn’t come true if I told someone.

—— I understand your desire to realize that dream, so I won’t ask you further.

Yamashita
Well, my original motivation as to why I joined this industry is my broad vision, that I want to connect with people worldwide. And I want to become even more successful with Ms Tamaki and Mr Sakai.

—— Ms Tamaki and Mr Sakai mentioned publicly a few years ago that they aim to work internationally. I was impressed with the incredible idea they envision.

Yamashita
What they tried to do since beginning their business has resulted in them surviving today. Recently one of the factory workers told me that all processes from making materials up to designing and selling have resulted in our survival. That made me see that we are on the right track because one of the sewing workers said ‘if there is no uniqueness in the materials, it won’t end in good results’. What is left to do is to inform the world of what we are looking to accomplish. I want to express that to a greater audience.

—— You are right. There are profound reasons behind your philosophies of “Why you stick on one item?” or “Doing it all by yourselves”.

Yamashita
Absolutely.

—— That is my part in all this, to describe to others of this uniqueness, which can be challenging to explain precisely what “tamaki niime” is, yet I find it so fascinating and enjoyable to do so.
